Autumn is here!!! Finally, the weather in Maryland is starting to cooperate and get a little cooler. Hopefully I will be wearing my fall boots, jeans and cozy sweaters soon. Fall is my favorite season. The changing of the leaves, the crisp feeling in the air, and the excitement of the holidays right around the corner always brings a feeling of anticipation and puts a smile on my face.
October is always a good time in the Burnett house. We usually hit the pumpkin patch and apple orchard. Chow down on some yummy food, go for family hikes and get the house decorated for Halloween. We have a family tradition of watching some Halloween movies from scary to down right corny and it never gets old. No matter how old the boys get, they always ask when are we going to watch The Great Pumpkin.
Of course with the start of autumn, also comes all my usual fall cravings. I am a sucker for anything pumpkin. Pumpkin smoothies, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin soup, and yep, even pumpkin donuts. This is the season I also start baking more and bust out the crockpot for some good ole comfort food. There is something so soothing about cuddling on the couch in front of the fireplace watching a movie with the family while sipping apple cider or eating a homemade treat.
Speaking of crockpots, I made a really easy pulled pork recipe from one of my favorite cookbooks called The Paleo Kitchen by Juli Bauer and George Bryant. You may recognize Juli Bauer from her blog paleomg. If you like good food with clean ingredients you should totally check it out.
As I mentioned, I am a sucker for pumpkin, so I made these cookies yesterday, Protein Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies from paleomgs blog. Pretty tasty. Even the boys liked them!
Finally, last pumpkin recipe I swear, well at least in this blog post :). I whipped together a Pumpkin Spice Sweet Potato Smoothie the other day. So delicious and easy!
Half a cup of crushed ice
half a frozen banana
half a cooked and peeled sweet potato
2 oz. of Aloe juice (optional)
half a cup of canned coconut milk
1 tbsp. of flax seed meal
1 scoop of protein powder
2 tsp. of pumpkin spice
Blend all together and drink!
What about you? Do have a favorite season?
Any fall traditions you enjoy?
Do you have a yummy fall comfort food you would like to share?
If you had to choose, which would you pick? Apple or pumpkin? I would pick pumpkin picking, but apple cider. Apple crisp, pumpkin carving, pumpkin seeds, but caramel apples.
